What to wear for a night out at the Theater

February 3rd, 2012

Not sure what to wear when going to the Theater? LA,  Miami,  New York,  Chicago,  London can all be different depending on weather, the cities views on fashion and other factors. Los Angeles Theater can be known as usually dressing casual while New York and London dressing to the nines is not uncomon. Here is some ideas for a night out at the Theater.

To look best when going to that opening night, you need to know the best outfit to wear when going to the theatre. Even though the official dress code is not there, you will not be respecting the directors and the actors if you go to the theatre wearing your pajamas. This is time to remove your Sunday best and iron them and you need to learn what to wear when you are going to a theatre.

Here are the things you will need if you want to identify the best outfit:

Outfit for men:

  • A white dress shirt
  • A suit or sport coat
  • Loafers
  • Ironed slacks
  • Nice Jeans
  • Dress shoes
  • A nice belt
  • A collared shirt

Outfit for women:

  • Nice heels
  • Pencil skirt
  • Cocktail dress, the length should be knee-length and should not be very short
  • A blouse or tank top with cardigan

1. Know the type of performance you are attending.

Dressing rules are different and this mainly depends on the time of the day or of the week when the show is being held. The shows that are held over the weekdays and on daylight hours and over the weekends usually require that you dress-down and make sure that your look is polished. The dress for the shows that are held on weekend nights and evenings must be formal and the guest are usually urged to dress this way. The first step in learning what to wear when going to the theatre is to know the type of performance you are attending.

2. Business casual attire is used when you are going to a weekend or weekday performance held during the day.

The affairs here are usually casual; there is no need of wearing a suit and a tie. However, your look should be presentable and the only option that you can go for is the business casual. For guys, you should wear a collared shirt and tuck it into your slacks, make sure they are ironed, and pair them with a good belt and loafers (the belt and loafers should both be either all brown or black). The dressing code for the ladies should be a tank top with a cardigan or a blouse, heels and a pencil skirt.

3. When you are going to a weekend night, weekday evening or opening night performance, the dressing should be business formal.

Night and opening night performances in most theatres are mainly the black-tie affairs and you should dress this way. Men should wear a combination formal pants and sports coat or a dark suit, the shirt should be white and a tie that match. Ladies should dress simply with classy heels and a cocktail dress.

When you know what you will wear when going to a theatre, you will make these outings memorable. When you put on the best clothes and act the way you are expected, your look will always be awesome on every occasion. There is no code of conduct that has been set for the theatres, make sure that you are always  tidy, presentable and neat to make people know that you know what to wear when going to the theatre.

We hope you enjoy your night at the Los Angeles Pantages Theater or one of the other fine Theater’s you may be attending.  If you are looking for a restaurant near the Pantages theater please feel free to check out our restaurant guide.

HOLLYWOOD – “Chicago,” winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, will return to Los Angeles at the Pantages Theatre for a limited two-week engagement May 15-27
After her critically-acclaimed debut as Roxie Hart on Broadway and in London’s West End, Christie Brinkley, one of the world’s most successful supermodels, will make her Los Angeles debut this spring as she reprises her killer role in the award-winning musical.
