Ten reasons to see the Book of Mormon

June 20th, 2012

The Book of Mormon Musical. It’s true, And I lived to tell about it.

I must confess, I was interested to see what all the buzz was about. The Broadway musical called “the best musical of this century” about the Book of Mormon was great opportunity too appealing to reject. It was an complete BOOST.  My mom laughed even more than i did. And at places I did not. Her howls of joy made me wish I knew the inside details of everything-Mormon so I, too, could possibly get every single joke.

Regardless, given the South Park reputation of this production, here are my top 10 good reasons to see it, which consists of a listof sorts that will help you choose if you are truly the target audience for such a theater-going experience as The Book of Mormon:

  1. You can view South Park episodes with out getting mad and upset. You’ve got to realize: the sense of humor of this musical is very South Park. Which indicates it’s incredibly wise, yet it takes things way far above the tolerable.
  2. Putting humor and religious beliefs together is fine in your book. Be ready for them to poke some serious fun, not only at Mormonism, but the nature of religious beliefs in general.
  3. You are religiously edutacted enough to get the jokes.
  4. You have got a smooth spot in you about the power and reason of belief, and the ways that it inspires the devout. As much as they poke fun of, I’ll name it “Mormon earnestness,” the musical also highlights this thing pretty much.
  5. You may want to close your eyes at some of the most fancy parts. I will not recount them here. I definitely had my palms over my eyes during a few scenes. But I was having fun like crazy behind them, too.
  6. You adore great music. Mainly by Robert Lopez, the composer behind the Broadway smash, Avenue Q, who did the music for Book of Mormon. The amazing, wonderful music. The songs are insane fantastic.
  7. You enjoy in great musicals.
  8. You really like  listen to men in particular, vocal in harmony. The musical has a pack of missionary Mormon boys. They are not only absolutely entertaining and succeeding, but their voices are brilliant.
  9. You adore looking at guys dancing in a musical. Yes, truth be told, there is wonderful dancing in this musical. All performed by the missionary boys. The choreography is both terrific as well and increases the humor.
  10. You need to ensure you get in on what is certain to be Broadway’s latest smash. Truly. It’s that funny.

Conclusion

I want to see it again. Seriously. I do. The book of Mormon is sweetest thing you’ll see in the theater this year, and quite possibly the funniest musical ever. I’m looking forward to seeing it at the Pantages Theater.

Mamma Mia coming to the Pantages Theater

January 19th, 2012

Mamma Mia! is a musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Although the title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia”, the plot is fictional, not biographical.

Mamma Mia is an infectious and funny musical featuring 22 of ABBA’s best known songs, including the Winner Takes It all, Money Money Money, Dancing Queen, Chiquitita, Voulez Vous, S. O. S, Thank you for the Music, Knowing Me Knowing You, and, of course, Mamma Mia.

With the tale informing miracle from the tunes associated with ABBA, all of us fulfill Donna, the feisty forty-something solitary mother, that recalls the actual faraway reminiscences associated with carefree times as well as reckless evenings although the woman’s child Sophie goals associated with custom, love along with a large whitened wedding ceremony

The story takes place on a mythical Greek island in the present day, and centers around a young girl named Sophie who dreams of a white wedding, with her father giving her away at the altar (I HAVE A DREAM). Problem is, she doesn’t know who her dad is – and she’s getting married the next day. As the show begins, she explains to her chums that her mum, Donna, fell into the arms of three men within a short space of time. So she’s got three possible dads, and has invited them all to the wedding (HONEY, HONEY).

Put together by Abba’s own Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup’s songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she’s trying to identify which of three men is her father. That’s about it. Wisely, the musical doesn’t mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus’s songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative.

Spamalot

January 17th, 2012

Spamalot is a musical comedy the actual 1974 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Such as the movie, it’s a extremely irreverent parody from the Arthurian Tale, however it varies in the movie in lots of ways, particularly within it’s parodies associated with Broadway theater. Eric Idle, an associate from the Monty Python group, authored the actual musical’s guide as well as lyrics as well as collaborated along with John Du Prez upon the majority of the songs.

Background

Proof for that living associated with Spamalot dates back towards the Darkish Age range. Very first documented within the annals associated with Blackfriars Monastery through Thelonius Monk within 932AD as well as lately reissued within electronically remastered luxurious collector’s release, Spamalot had been regarded as for hundreds of years to become a good immutable, certainly holy textual content.

Summary

Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled too expensive) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features the hilarious songs He is Not Dead Yet, Knights Of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song -Always look on the bright side of life.

Written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, who composed most of the music, the original 2005 Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and won three, including Best Musical. That success continues to present day.

Billed as “lovingly ripped off from” Monty Python’s 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy grail, ” the production included a small collection of brass musicians, a conductor, digitized music and stage imagery.

Even though these aspects labored jointly, it turned out your singer-dancer-actors — almost all of to whom played out a number of jobs — whom genuinely produced strangely one’s.

And with this came up first-rate diction, full of energy physicality throughout jobsite set ups along with choreography, impeccably timed onward propulsion, treat dress-up costume alterations, masterful tunes, lyrics along with vocal range and also a without layovers, up-tempo blather in the silly, punny, witty, attention seeking, extravagant and ordinary crass.

Lady of the Lake’s love element with Arthur is obviously a backroom affair (until their marriage, that is) lamented in her realistic musical tantrum (“Whatever Happened to My Part? ”) of a diva not getting enough “prime time. ”

This musical technology may be a parodic riff with Broadway musicals, doing enjoyment connected with per se on just about every flip. This story is usually rife while using the characteristically sexy portions which is Monty Python is usually well known.

Arthur Rowan makes a worthy King Arthur. Brittany Woodrow brings a terrific voice and styling to the role of the Lady of the the Lake. Kasidy Devlin has a great fling as Sir Robin, as does Marylander Adam Grabau portraying Sir Lancelot, the French Taunter and a couple of other choice parts.

This well-oiled production reconfirms that “Spamalot” is a big, old-fashioned musical with a silly heart inside. It offers something to entertain and/or insult just about everybody. Can’t ask more of show than that.

Conclusion

“Spamalot” is bawdy, irreverent, politically incorrect in a way only Monty Python could do it. And for this Monty Python fan, it surpassed my wildest expectations, and they were set high from the start.

At its best, “Spamalot” was a dolled-up homage to the original film and a silly, self-congratulating tribute to the comedy of Monty Python, which is kind of funny in and of itself. At its worst, the “Mad Magazine” treatment maybe marked down a comedy classic just a little.

Spamalot will be playing at the Los Angeles Pantages Theater from Feb 28th – March 4th 2012. Order Spamalot Tickets Today.
