Among the musical numbers of the Million Dollar Quartet included Blue Suede Shoes, Real Wild Child, Matchbox, Who Do You Love?, Folsom Prison Blues, and Memories Are Made of This by Elvis Presley.

Mamma Mia coming to the Pantages Theater

January 19th, 2012

Mamma Mia! is a musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Although the title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia”, the plot is fictional, not biographical.

Mamma Mia is an infectious and funny musical featuring 22 of ABBA’s best known songs, including the Winner Takes It all, Money Money Money, Dancing Queen, Chiquitita, Voulez Vous, S. O. S, Thank you for the Music, Knowing Me Knowing You, and, of course, Mamma Mia.

With the tale informing miracle from the tunes associated with ABBA, all of us fulfill Donna, the feisty forty-something solitary mother, that recalls the actual faraway reminiscences associated with carefree times as well as reckless evenings although the woman’s child Sophie goals associated with custom, love along with a large whitened wedding ceremony

The story takes place on a mythical Greek island in the present day, and centers around a young girl named Sophie who dreams of a white wedding, with her father giving her away at the altar (I HAVE A DREAM). Problem is, she doesn’t know who her dad is – and she’s getting married the next day. As the show begins, she explains to her chums that her mum, Donna, fell into the arms of three men within a short space of time. So she’s got three possible dads, and has invited them all to the wedding (HONEY, HONEY).

Put together by Abba’s own Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup’s songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she’s trying to identify which of three men is her father. That’s about it. Wisely, the musical doesn’t mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus’s songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative.

Spamalot

January 17th, 2012

Spamalot is a musical comedy the actual 1974 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Such as the movie, it’s a extremely irreverent parody from the Arthurian Tale, however it varies in the movie in lots of ways, particularly within it’s parodies associated with Broadway theater. Eric Idle, an associate from the Monty Python group, authored the actual musical’s guide as well as lyrics as well as collaborated along with John Du Prez upon the majority of the songs.

Background

Proof for that living associated with Spamalot dates back towards the Darkish Age range. Very first documented within the annals associated with Blackfriars Monastery through Thelonius Monk within 932AD as well as lately reissued within electronically remastered luxurious collector’s release, Spamalot had been regarded as for hundreds of years to become a good immutable, certainly holy textual content.

Summary

Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled too expensive) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features the hilarious songs He is Not Dead Yet, Knights Of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song -Always look on the bright side of life.

Written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, who composed most of the music, the original 2005 Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and won three, including Best Musical. That success continues to present day.

Billed as “lovingly ripped off from” Monty Python’s 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy grail, ” the production included a small collection of brass musicians, a conductor, digitized music and stage imagery.

Even though these aspects labored jointly, it turned out your singer-dancer-actors — almost all of to whom played out a number of jobs — whom genuinely produced strangely one’s.

And with this came up first-rate diction, full of energy physicality throughout jobsite set ups along with choreography, impeccably timed onward propulsion, treat dress-up costume alterations, masterful tunes, lyrics along with vocal range and also a without layovers, up-tempo blather in the silly, punny, witty, attention seeking, extravagant and ordinary crass.

Lady of the Lake’s love element with Arthur is obviously a backroom affair (until their marriage, that is) lamented in her realistic musical tantrum (“Whatever Happened to My Part? ”) of a diva not getting enough “prime time. ”

This musical technology may be a parodic riff with Broadway musicals, doing enjoyment connected with per se on just about every flip. This story is usually rife while using the characteristically sexy portions which is Monty Python is usually well known.

Arthur Rowan makes a worthy King Arthur. Brittany Woodrow brings a terrific voice and styling to the role of the Lady of the the Lake. Kasidy Devlin has a great fling as Sir Robin, as does Marylander Adam Grabau portraying Sir Lancelot, the French Taunter and a couple of other choice parts.

This well-oiled production reconfirms that “Spamalot” is a big, old-fashioned musical with a silly heart inside. It offers something to entertain and/or insult just about everybody. Can’t ask more of show than that.

Conclusion

“Spamalot” is bawdy, irreverent, politically incorrect in a way only Monty Python could do it. And for this Monty Python fan, it surpassed my wildest expectations, and they were set high from the start.

At its best, “Spamalot” was a dolled-up homage to the original film and a silly, self-congratulating tribute to the comedy of Monty Python, which is kind of funny in and of itself. At its worst, the “Mad Magazine” treatment maybe marked down a comedy classic just a little.

Spamalot will be playing at the Los Angeles Pantages Theater from Feb 28th – March 4th 2012. Order Spamalot Tickets Today.

Wicked Musical – Review

October 6th, 2011

The beginning of Wicked

It all started with the publication of the Gregory Maguire’s novel ‘Wicked’ in 1995.  It told the untold story of bad gals from L. Frank Baum’s classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – the Witches of Oz.

It is the story of Elphaba, a green girl who turns out to be the Wicked Witch much later in her life. The story unravels as it follows Elphaba’s life from birth to college. It brings to us the events that trigger the wickedness in her. There are other characters such as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North- a spoiled rich girl with whom Elphapha is friends with in the beginning. There is also the local prince Fiyero, who is the knight in shining armor and of course the Wizard of Oz himself.

Reasons why you should watch Wicked

  • It is an interesting take on the Wizard of the Oz.
  • It is indeed out of the ordinary to see a green-skinned high school girl become a political activist bend on mending the past mistakes.
  • It brings out the ‘her- story’ of Oz as against the much popular and misrepresented history of Oz.
  • Other than being a passionate and beautiful rendering of a tale about love and friendship, the musical stands out for its special effects.
  • With outstanding costumes and sets- winner of the Tony Awards and musical score from Stephen Schwartz, Wicked has many things to boast of.
  • The special effects make the entire musical nothing short of a spectacle.
  • It is a one-stop entertainer for the whole family as the musical is open to all from 9 years.

Enjoy the Wicked and experience the other sides of the story like never before.

A little bit of Broadway History

September 29th, 2011

Broadway is a group of 40 professional theatres in the Theatre District and in Lincoln Center, in Manhattan, New York City. It is not just for theatre that Broadway is famous for, its legacy attracts millions of people whether they are theatre enthusiasts or not.

Here is a little bit of Broadway history.

It was only in the year 1750 that New York got its own Theaters. It happened when Walter Murray and Thomas Kean came up with a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. It was just the beginning.  It was a company from Britain that next entered the scene. The theatre was established by Lewis Hallam in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1752. By the summer of 1753 they moved to New York. Though the Revolutionary War put a pause on the theatre scene for a while, but it was back with a bang in 1798.

The Park Theater that could seat 2000 people was built on Chatham Street which became the Park Row.  It was followed by the Bowery Theatre in 1826. Many more theatres came up as the 1830’s was the age of the Blackface minstrel shows.  In 1829, Niblo’s Garden at Broadway and Prince Street- a 3,000-seat theatre- which presented musical and non musical entertainments became the New York’s most happening night place. By the 1940’s an entertainment complex under P.T. Barnum came up in lower Manhattan.

The Broadway history took a new turn with the opening of the Astor Place Theatre in 1847. In 1849 the Astor Place Riot took place regarding the upper class audience at Astor Place.  There after entertainment in New York was divided. The upper and upper middle classes began going for operas, the minstrel shows, melodrama entertained the middle class and the men of the working class, and the lower middle class had to content themselves with variety shows in concert saloons. The plays of William Shakespeare were popular in Broadway at the time and the actor Edwin Booth gave some scintillating performances on stage at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1865. He later started Booth’s Theatre also.

The Broadway was rejuvenated in the year 1868 with Lyndia Thomson and her theatrical troupe bringing English burlesques to the American soil. Theatre began to move to midtown New York in the 1870’s. Union Square and Madison square became the new areas. In the early 1900’s Broadway theatres reached Times Square also.

The arrival of the Musical

It was in 1857 that The Elves came to Broadway. It was the first “long- run” musical, which went up to 50 performances. Then Laura Keene’s “musical burletta” Seven Sisters (1860) also established the popular entertainment as musicals.

The modern version of the musical with dance and original music began with The Black Crook, which premiered in New York on September 12, 1866. Though it lasted five and a half hours it ran for a record 474 performances.

Then it was time for the musical comedies, The Black Domino/Between You, Me and the Post, being the first. Tony Pastor opened the first vaudeville theatre in Union Square in 1881. Broadway became the scene for comedians like Edward Harrigan and Tony Hart between 1878 and 1885.

Better times

As New York grew, so did its entertainment. Theatres received more patrons and they also became women friendly.  Many famous comic operas reached Broadway. Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore(1878), Reginald Dekoven’s Robin Hood (1891) and John Philip Sousa’s El Capitan (1896) Charles Hoyt’s A Trip to Chinatown (1891)  and Irene in 1919 were some of the greatest Broadway shows. .

Hundreds of musical comedies were staged on Broadway in the 1890s and early 1900s In the early years of the 20th century, translations of popular late-19th century continental operettas  were joined by the “Princess Theatre” shows of the 1910s by writers such as P. G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton and Harry B. Smith. Victor Herbert.

The popularity of Broadway is what led to the establishment of Tony Awards in 1947.
