Hairspray is set in 1962 in Baltimore , Maryland . Tracy Turnblad wants more than anything to dance on The Corny Collins show. She is plump and doesn't want to end up like her mother, whose dreams were given up on ages ago. Connie wins a spot on the show and becomes an overnight sensation. She uses her newfound popularity to launch a campaign for racial integration, going so far as to march for it, risk arrestment, and eventually realizing her dream on the show.
