Is Matilda the Musical good for kids?
Matilda is perfect for all kids, with its amazing costumes, onstage magic, over the top comedic preformances makes Matilda a wonderful time for all children.

Matilda the Musical Matilda: the Musical has been tearing up the West End and Broadway since its debut on both circuits in 2012 and 2013. The show has been described by critics and audiences alike as everything from magical to exhilarating to heartwarming and yes, even a little naughty. The show is based on the on the award-winning, best-selling and beloved book, titled Matilda, by Roald Dahl.

The story follows the journey of a young gifted girl named Matilda, who was born to parents who do not appreciate her and snub her many gifts, which include reading books at a very young age and being able to understand complicated subjects such as mathematics and science. She is eventually enrolled at a private school run by the evil and looming headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who hates children-and just about anyone who isn't herself! But Matilda finds a friend in Miss Honey, a teacher who encourages Matilda's gifts and befriends the young girl.

Both Miss Honey and Matilda must deal with the abuse of Miss Trunchbull, who is bent on stamping out the spark of rebellion that Matilda has planted in the often abused students of the Trunchbull's school. Matilda eventually discovers that she is not only gifted in her reading ability, but in a supernatural way as well-she can move things with her mind! Of course, if you've read the book or seen the widely popular film, you know how it ends-Matilda triumphs over the Trunchbull and convinces her parents to allow her to live with the loving Miss Honey for a happily ever after.

The musical adaptation of Matilda not only captures the themes of the book-acceptance, the importance of encouraging and loving children, the dangers of watching too much television or using too much electronic entertainment, and the triumph of good over evil-but expands upon them as well. The musical highlights the tragic backstory of Miss Honey by incorporating it into a fictional story-within-the-show, told by Matilda to her favorite librarian, Mrs. Phelps. Although some critics found this fictional device too distracting from the main story of the show, it does effectively tell Miss Honey's story without forcing the character to spill everything out in a lengthy monologue, which might lose some audience members.

The musical includes several other additions that further flesh out Matilda's tale-thankfully, these additions only add to the delight, charm and wonder that the show brings every night. By: D Kelly
