Newsies the Musical
The run time for Newsies is:
2 Hours 20 Minutes

Newsies March 24 - April 18 (2015)

Newsies is an inspirational musical that is based upon a true story that took place in New York in 1899. It is about child newspaper sellers, often called “newsies,” who decide to go on strike after the price rates of their newspapers rise. They end up going to battle with corrupt businessmen and public officials. They even have it out with the famous Joseph Pulitzer, who was the one responsible for raising the rates of the newspapers in the first place. The idea is that these increased rates are given at the expense of the newspaper boys that try to sell them. So, obviously they are upset by it and want to fight for their right to earn a decent commission. The newsies are led by a newsboy named Jack Kelly, who dreams of living his life as an artist and moving far away from big city life. As the newsies take on these high end newspaper officials, they get help from a gorgeous reporter named Katherine Plumber. She helps the newsies spread their message throughout the city and show the importance of taking care of the little people, who help the city function.

Newsies is based on a 1992 film with the same name, which starred the now famous Christian Bale, Robert Duvall, Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman. That film originally did horribly at the box office, but eventually gained a big enough cult following to the point where Disney Theatrical Productions brought it to life in the form of a musical as a theatrical production. Newsies is certainly fast paced with its dance choreography and contains memorable songs that you will be singing to yourself all night long. The songs were written by Alan Menken, who is an eight time Oscar winner for such musical classic films as “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

Fans of the 1992 film will certainly enjoy this musical, but it will also be enjoyable to a new generation of fans that have never heard of the movie. It is simply a feel-good story that has nothing obscene or dark about it at all. There should be no problems taking children of all ages to see this musical production. There are no curse words or violence, which is rare these days in any production on stage or on film. The parents will even enjoy the romantic leads sharing a passionate kiss towards the end. So, you should definitely check out this musical when it comes to the Los Angeles Pantages Theater on March 24th through April 15th of 2015.
