Wicked Dec 10th - Feb 1 (2015)
Wicked is an interesting play that will surely be enjoyed by anyone who is a fan of the classic “Wizard of Oz” movie. Wicked is actually a prequel to the movie because it features back stories on some famous characters that we got to know from the Wizard of Oz movie. These characters include the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch. Wicked shows how the evil witch actually became wicked and how Glinda had a spoiled rich upbringing. We even get to learn a little more about the Wizard of Oz himself, who was actually a very troubled man before he became the great so called “wizard.” Wicked gives Wizard of Oz fans a deeper look into the history of Oz. For one thing, the audience learns that the real name of the Wicked Witch of the West is Elphaba Thropp. She is a political activist that fights any injustices that take place and tries to correct past mistakes and personal tragedies that took place in Oz. You probably never imagined that character in such a deep way when you saw the movie “Wizard of Oz” for the first time. The Wicked musical is mainly a story about trust, friendship and love amongst the characters of the city.
For those of you that are not diehard Wizard of Oz fans, you will still enjoy this production because of its amazing visual effects. Its musical score is by Stephen Schwartz, who also did the music for Pippin and Godspell as well. As you can imagine, the costumes of the characters are eye catching and even more exciting to see right in front of you on stage. Since the Wizard of Oz was always considered to be a story for the entire family to watch, then you should have no problem bringing your kids to see this. However, you may want to have them watch the 1939 movie first to see how they like it. Wicked is kind of long and does feature the flying monkeys, which will probably be scary for children under eight years old. There are even allusions to violence and death that take place offstage, but children under eight probably won’t even understand that because the audience doesn’t get to see it. So, this should be okay for most members of the family to see and enjoy together. Just make sure your kids have actually seen the movie first because they will probably appreciate the musical a whole lot more that way.
